We are all dumb cows

chewing our cud, strings of drool

hang from our mouths

as we watch cars ride by.

Addicted to sitting,

letting the world roll by,

I’m a refugee from boredom and being.

Here I sit,

struggling to be joyful and at ease.

Trying to meditate,

lassoing the wildness of the mind,

gnashing my teeth, synapses on fire

bombarded by random thoughts.

Still breathing,

a gift of the moment,

giving myself permission to do nothing.

Just being, doing nothing,

nothing doing,

so much harder than doing something.

Not being somebody,

becoming nobody,

difficult, but essential.

Letting go

before being forced to let go.
