Discovery, 1939

Out on the sun porch where no one goes

the kiss of the sun streams through the house.

Lacy white curtains shield climbing clematis

from peeking in windows

as they bob and weave

in the soft morning breeze .

A curious child exploring the porch

discovers a hidden treasure:

Grandma's treadle sewing machine.

Six small drawers filled with lost

momentos of the past.

Old gold cufflinks and Lucky Strike tins

miniature tools, marbles, thimbles and threads,

Zippo lighters, coins, watches and clocks,

faded photos and picture postcards,

telling stories of distant relations,

who traveled the world

and are now forgotten.
